Entries for November 2007
This is the Seattle Startups Index* (SSI) for the month of November which reached the incredible level of 210 startups on the list. Is Seattle a great place for startups or what? Last month there were 188 companies on the list. UPDATE: BuddyTV is back on the list after Andy Liu, one of the founders, told me they were not acquired. Thanks John Cook to also point that out. | # | Company | Alexa Rank | Compete Rank | Average Rank | Index Change | | 1 | Intelius | 3,343 | 112 | 1,727 | - | | 2 | Zillow | 2,815 | 795 | 1,805 | - | | 3 | iLike | 3,136 | 788 | 1,962 | - Last year was interesting because I've met quite a few entrepreneurs. There are always a good number of current Microsoft employees that are thinking of jumping the ship, and is a way for me to convince them to do it. Last Thursday (November 1st), I published the Seattle Startup Index. I tried a different PR strategy to get more eyeballs into the list. The results were great if you think local, but horrible if you think national. No matter what, this list is super interesting for the Seattle-area startups, but it would be good for us (Seattle-area entrepreneurs) if it could reach outside our region to bring some awareness of all the cool startups from here. So, I devised a strategy, which included the following: - November 1st was on a Thursday, not the best day for PR (which is Tuesday) and not the worst either (which is Friday).
- During the last 2 weeks I collected emails of CEOs, founders, bloggers, investors and entrepreneurs.
- I prepared a message that was very short and to the point: Help divulge the list and bring awareness to our community. How? By linking to the post and hoping we would show up on TechMeme.
- The previous publications of the list had some yada, yada at the beginning that was too local. I skipped that on the next text and add a friendlier, positive view of Seattle startup community.
- Few days before the post I sent emails to some distribution lists and wrote on the blog for people that were not on the list to submit their companies.
- I've made sure the post came out early in the morning (about 9:00 AM).
- I've sent a different message to the local press, focused more on "trends", like the number of new startups, startups that are gaining momentum, or losing it, etc.
- I've sent a very-very short one-liner to national bloggers (think TechCrunch, GigaOm, etc) and "famous" investors (Brad Feld, Rick Segal, Fred Wilson, etc.).
- I've sent email to some distribution lists that I'm member of.
- PR is about momentum. You have to keep putting wood on the fire while it's burning, so I kept emailing people throughout the day when they asked for something as fast as I could.
The results Less than stellar. I expected a much higher number of visitors to the site. But here are some stats for November 1st and 2nd: - Total visits: 1,010
- Total Page Views: 1,809
- Unique Visitors: 859

- 33% direct traffic

We've got quite a few bloggers that helped us (thank you all!). What did I learned? I wished I'd say I learned a lot about this experience, but the only concrete learning I've got about it is that Seattle people/entrepreneurs are awesome, friendly and supporting. I also learned that TechMeme sucks. I saw posts there that had less than a handful of inbound links, and we had more than a dozen in just a few hours and it made no difference. The problem is TechMeme is a blog club. It's hard to get in. What bothers me is that this is not how they advertise themselves. Will I do the same thing for December's list? I see no reason why not do it this way. The only thing that was a bit annoying was the flood of people that wanted their company on the list and they didn't even bother to check if they were on the it already (at least 20 companies were on that category) and the number of people that didn't qualify for it (about 10 submissions or so). |
