SSI: Seattle Startup Index (July edition)

Another month is complete and we have the new Seattle Startup Index (SSI), a list of Seattle Web 2.0 startups ordered by their Alexa Ranking.

The list has reached a new record with 157 companies, 6 more than last month and I'm sure we are missing a few companies. If you know any send it to me (it has to be a Web 2.0 startup from Seattle). But that is not the only record being broken this time, Versionate has moved 53 positions (!!!) on the rank to number 66, the biggest move since I started the SSI.

The other notable mentions in growth are Down2night moving 19 spots to number 55, Wishpot moving 14 positions to rank number 47 and Ripl moving 13 positions to number 89. And the newcomer of the month is They're Beautiful (by Jackson Fish Market) that debuts at number 49.

But not everything is rosy on Seattle-startup-land. Quite a few companies lost a lot of their ranking. Maybe July is not a good month for Web 2.0 companies overall. At the worst drop we have Vizrea, down 35 positions to number 102, XoomPad down 28 to #83, and Beigo down 17 positions to number 122.

The SSI50 index, which is the average Alexa ranking of the top 50 Seattle startups has moved up again, not as fast as last month when it gained 3,619 positions:

Good work...Marcelo! However, I am curious about the point of this exercise. What does moving up or down a few places mean? Does a higher rank in the Index signify a higher likelihood of success in the market?

If eyeballs are a metric for success as a web20 company (which may very well be the case), why not use a composite index containing both Alexa and Compete ranks? We all know that the Alexa sample is very skewed and easily manipulated. This index is only going to give more people an incentive to manipulate their alexa rankings.

For the last 6 days Sampa's Alexa Ranking has been 46,465. Alexa computes the ranking daily. For the value be the same for a 6-day period would be such a coincidence that the universe would implode. The reason for Vizrea's drop is that the site has been rebranded as 'Webfives' & traffic now hits Webfives.com rather than Vizrea. You can take Vizrea off the list and replace it with Webfives. See Brier Dudley's article for details:
