Great list Marcelo. I'd be interested in your perspective on when a company graduates from startup status and becomes just a plain-ole company?

The "graduation" is very arbitrary.

For this list, after a lot of debate with other entrepeneurs, we thought that a company is not a startup anymore when it has 5 or more years on the market or it becomes a publicly traded company (or acquired by one)

Nathan Kaiser from nPost (www.npost.com) has a great definition, but it would be impractical for this list: "a startup is a company that has 80%+ chance of failure."

Why not include quantcast rankings?

Quantcast treats sites that use the Quantacast service very differently from the sites that don't use it, making it less interesting to compare multiple sites.

On the other hand, Quantacast is a better source of information (if you use their script) to track trends and absolute numbers.

OK. Any explanations for the inconsistent correlation between Alexa and Compete rankings for the companies, even top companies, above?

Good work Marcelo! It would be interesting to rate the startups by revenue, funding, and employees in addition to traffic (relative). I am sure they would all be more than happy to pony up that info!

I know of quite a few of these sites that are generating quite a bit of revenue, but not so much the traffic.

whois suggests they are owned by the same entity; shouldn't they be combined in some way?

FYI - Earth Class Mail is now found at www.earthclassmail.com and the old URL www.remotecontrolmail.com is now inactive, hence the drop in ranking. Please take note for next month. This month's Alexa is 79,069 and compete is 102,927.

@Mike: Both Alexa and Compete are sample-based, and they don't have enough samples, or good demographic data about their samples that make the data more accurate.

@Nathan: It's very hard to get 100% of startups to reply to any email. At best you can get 60-70% of them to reply, after that you'll have to pick up the phone and call 50-60 companies. I don't have the time to do that.

@KD: We usually are very strict about companies with multiple sites, but on certain cases, when they have an independent brand, product and site we'll consider listing them independently, because they are like "mini-companies". On that bucket you'll find Robot Co-op, SecondSpace, mpire, and others.

It is very easy to manipulate Alexa. It is based on the stats they geenrate from thier toolbar. If you want your startup to be listed high on the Alexa rating, have all your emplyoyees, friends ext. install Alexa toolbar and then visit your site atleast once a day and within a month (maybe week) and you will see what I mean.

It's been fun to watch Shelfari move up the chart the last few months. If you look at Alexa dailies (instead of trailing 3 months), I imagine we will continue to edge higher.
